Why Charlotte runners head north for Thanksgiving

  • The Thanksgiving half marathon. If you've been building mileage all fall, 13.1 on Thanksgiving morning is about the best excuse there is for a second slice of pie. It's the only Thanksgiving Day half marathon within 150 miles of Charlotte, and it starts at 7:30 AM.
  • Three distances, one start area. Half at 7:30, 10K at 7:35, 5K at 7:40. Your running club, your roommate who walks, and your parents in town for the holiday can all pick their own distance and meet at the same finish.
  • No parking garage, no shuttle, no meters. Parking is free and on site at Life Fellowship Church, with plenty of room. Pickup, start, finish and awards are all a short walk from your car.
  • You beat the traffic home. You're driving against the holiday flow, and the 5K crowd is usually headed back down I-77 by mid-morning.
  • Twenty years of doing this right. We've put this race on every Thanksgiving since 2007. Medal, tech shirt, collector's edition backpack, a hoodie for half marathoners who register by Oct 23, and awards three deep in every age group.

Make the trip easy on yourself

  • Pick up your packet race morning. It opens at 6:30 AM at the church, so there's no need for an extra Wednesday drive (Wednesday pickup is 11 AM–3 PM if you're up this way anyway).
  • Carpool. Plenty of room in the lot, but splitting the drive with your running buddies makes the morning more fun.
  • Dress in layers. It's usually in the 30s or 40s at the start. Keep a dry shirt in the car for the ride home.
  • Bring a can. Every runner brings one non-perishable food item for the Human Health Project, which supports local shelters.

The course

The half is two loops on paved Cornelius neighborhood roads with an out-and-back on the McDowell Creek Greenway, about 721 feet of climbing in total. If you train on Charlotte's greenways, that stretch will feel familiar. The 10K and 5K use the same roads with fewer hills, and it's all asphalt. Course maps are on the homepage.

Hosting family for the holiday?

Bring them. Walkers are welcome at every distance, strollers start at the back of the 5K, and kids under 4 walk free with a parent. There are prizes for the best turkey costumes, too. And if you're the one traveling this year, the virtual run lets you do any distance anywhere, and we ship the medal, shirt and swag the Monday after.
