Thanksgiving Races Near Charlotte & Lake Norman 2026: Which of Our Three Is Yours?

This year is the 20th Annual IDNutrition Lake Norman Half Marathon Turkey Trot 10K & 5K, and like every Thanksgiving since 2007, it's three races at once in Cornelius: a 5K, a 10K and a half marathon, all starting within 10 minutes of each other from Life Fellowship Church, about 20 miles north of uptown Charlotte off I-77 Exit 28 (driving up from Charlotte?). The half is the only Thanksgiving Day half marathon within 150 miles of Charlotte.

So the real question isn't which race. It's which distance. Here's how to pick, how to get ready in the five-ish weeks you've got left, and how to run Thanksgiving morning without stress.

Which distance is right for you?

Pick the 5K if...

  • You're walking, or you run a couple of times a week and want a fun morning
  • You've got kids, a stroller (start at the back) or a grandparent in the group. Kids under 4 walk free with a parent.
  • Your job is the turkey, and you need to be home early. The 5K starts at 7:40 and most walkers are done by around 9.
  • You want to win a costume prize. Turkey suits are strongly encouraged.

Pick the 10K if...

  • You've done a 5K or two and want something that feels like a real race
  • You can comfortably run 3–4 miles today
  • You want a hard effort, official results and a shot at age-group awards (top 3 men and women in every age group)
  • You want a long-ish run that earns the second plate without eating the whole morning

Pick the half marathon if...

  • You've been running most of the fall and your long run is already 7+ miles
  • You want a Thanksgiving tradition nobody else in the family can say they have. Remember, it's the only Thanksgiving Day half marathon within 150 miles of Charlotte.
  • You're fine with a rolling course: two loops on paved Cornelius roads plus an out-and-back on the McDowell Creek Greenway, about 721 feet of climbing in total. Course certification is pending.
  • You can finish by 11:15 AM (that's 3 hours 45 minutes, about a 17-minute-mile pace)

Pick the virtual run if...

You'll be out of town for Thanksgiving. Run any distance, anywhere, and we ship the medal, shirt and swag the Monday after the race. Registration is open until noon on Thanksgiving.

Splitting up is the move. Lots of families send one runner out at 7:30 for the half, the speedy cousin at 7:35 for the 10K, and everybody else at 7:40 for the 5K. You all finish under the same arch.

Five weeks out: a simple training plan

These are simple plans for regular folks, not elite programs. If you're new to running or have a health concern, check with your doctor first. Listen to your body, and when in doubt, pick the shorter distance. You can always come back and move up next year.

5K: from couch-ish to finish line

  • Weeks 1–2: three days a week, 25–30 minutes of run-walk (try 2 minutes jogging, 1 minute walking)
  • Weeks 3–4: three or four days a week, stretch the jogging parts. Do one longer session of 35–40 minutes.
  • Race week: two easy 20-minute sessions early in the week, then rest Wednesday
  • Walking it? Just walk 30–45 minutes three or four times a week. You'll be fine.

10K: build from 3 miles to 6

  • Weeks 1–2: three or four runs a week. The long run on the weekend goes 4, then 5 miles.
  • Weeks 3–4: add one run with a few short pickups (1 minute faster, 2 minutes easy). Long run 5.5, then 6 miles.
  • Race week: easy 3 miles on Monday or Tuesday, rest Wednesday, maybe a short shakeout. Race Thursday.

Half marathon: if your long run is already 7+

  • Weeks 1–3: long runs of 8, 9–10, then 10–11 miles at an easy, chatty pace. Two or three shorter runs during the week.
  • Week 4: last long run of about 8 miles, then start backing off
  • Race week: a couple of easy 3–4 mile runs, rest Wednesday. Go to bed early.
  • Practice on the greenway. The McDowell Creek Greenway is part of the course, so a few training miles there won't hurt.
  • Practice your fuel. Whatever gel, chew or snack you'll use on race day, try it on your long runs first.
